Jackie Nickerson’s portraits of African farm workers are a fine example of how photojournalism has become more artful and large format in its presentation of life’s realities over the last twenty years.
Her new series ‘Terrain’ takes things a stage further.
Currently showing at the Jack Shainman Gallery on 20th and 10th street, the images feature shots of workers, their identities hidden by plants, wire, baskets and crates, as if their occupation becomes them and at the same time obliterates them.
Seen in a gallery they are impressive and aesthetically arresting pieces of work, that makes us think about the relationship between people, their work and the environment.
