My recent and ongoing Pinterest obsession (16330 followers and counting people!) has led me to discover quite a few amazing photographers, both new and old. Undoubtedly my favorite discovery was Lillian Bassman. I’m ashamed to say I had never heard of her up to this point but the more I see of her work the more smitten I have become.

Born in Brooklyn in 1917, she was so much more than a mere fashion photographer. She transformed her prints in the lab by blurring, staining and bleaching them, giving them an almost painterly quality.

If her photographic skills weren’t enough to impress you, the fact that she mentored both Richard Avedon and Robert Frank, will.
I include both a link to a flickr photostream that features much of her work and a little bio.
