Sing Out Sister

Laura Mvula is a singer I’ve been hearing a lot about from my compatriots back in the UK but it isn’t until now that I’ve got round to listening to her debut album ‘Sing to the Moon’.

It’s a strangely touching work which at times makes me feel almost sad and at other times lifts me with it’s tight rhythmic arrangements and stirring choruses

Like all good singer/songwriter albums it allows you to feel that the person singing to you is giving something of herself, that these words are honest expressions of feeling even if the songs aren’t strictly autobiographical.

It reminds me in turn of Cinematic Orchestra, Massive Attack and Billie Holiday, while still being wholly original.
