In a way it reminds me a bit of Helmut Newton in that the women have a powerful darkness to their sexuality.
They pose provocatively and in some pictures offer themselves but the blackness of their eyes and funeral flowers that often feature in the compositions suggest that were you to get involved you might get more than you bargained for.
More controversially Ionesco used her very young daughter Eva in some of these pictures. In fact two images are featured here.
Others not featured were nude studies but unlike Sally Mann’s shots of her family Ionesco’s are highly sexualized.
In 2012 Eva actually sued her mother for exploiting her saying she received no money for the images, which amounted to a ‘stolen childhood’. The strange relationship between mother and daughter was turned into a film ‘My Little Princess starring Isabelle Huppert.
