The Colour of Cool

1077043_317820665020393_262992615_oWe’re all so wrapped up in the quest to be young, hip, and relevant that it seems almost miraculous that there are people out there seemingly dedicating themselves to doing precisely the opposite

Take Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprout. I very much doubt I’ll hear of him being involved in a spat with Perez Hilton or being the cause of a twitter storm.

His new album ‘Crimson/Red’ concentrates instead on coming up with 10 beautifully crafted songs done in the old style that have by turn the ability to amuse, entertain and touch us.

This coupled with the fact that McAloon increasingly looks like God, makes his new album (and frankly all of his albums going back to 1982’s Swoon) essential listening.

If you ever need reminding of the power of a witty 4-minute pop song, make ‘Crimson/Red’ your first stop.
