It’s hard to think of a more quintessentially American photographer than Gregory Crewdson.
His images are artfully cinematic, going so far as to use motion picture film equipment and techniques . They evoke both the Independent American filmmakers of the last twenty years and the more left field elements of Hollywood’s fifties past
He is cited as mentioning The Night of the Hunter, ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Blue Velvet’ as influences on his pictures along with painter Edward Hopper.
As a big fan of all of the above I find it easy to be captivated by his work, which puts the visual images American society consumes in the form of TV and movies at the heart of his art.
