One of the trickiest things for a photographer is finding your subject.
Happy the men, who like Emmet Gowin, discover that this happens to be their immediate family.
Gowin’s pictures have the intimate quality that can only be born of knowing your subjects as well as any person on earth. His portraits of his wife are particularly seductive and remind me of the kind of paintings Pierre Bonnard obsessively made of his partner, Marthe.
Many of the images remind me of another Virginia native, Sally Mann and as they pre-date Mann’s work I wouldn’t be surprised to learn he had been an influence on her.
