It’s been said about ballet that is the most irrelevant of the high arts. Not on the evidence of the Royal Ballet’s rendition of Frederick Ashton Midsummers Night Dream I saw .
I have no idea whether these dancers were better or worse than average. Or whether this particular version of ‘The Dream’ is better than versions past. What I do know is unlike opera, where the mere thought of sitting through 3 hours plus of it makes you go heavy lidded, there is something intrinsically fun about what is going down. Face it, a gigantic fatty warbling at the top of his or her voice is no match for a batch of highly toned and super fit dancers.
I’m never going to turn into a high culture guy but given the choice of classical concert, opera or ballet it’s ballet all the way.
