As I get older I get harder to please particularly when it comes to literary fiction. So it was pleasant surprise to come across Vendela Vida’s funny and touching ‘The Diver’s Clothes Lie Empty’
Set in modern day Morocco it involves the hapless adventures of a mixed-up young woman who meets disaster after disaster by compounding every error she makes. Without giving anything away the novel reveals a profound and moving reason for her bizarre decision making and takes the tale to an unexpected place, given the comic mayhem that has ensued before.
Along the way she gets involved with Moroccan police, the US Embassy, Patti Smith, a Russian billionaire and an American movie star as dramatic but plausible twists and turns are added to the tale.
It’s a ride that at 200 pages is well worth taking, as I doubt you will read a better American novel all year.
