In my late teens I happened across a battered copy of Kenneth Anger’s Hollywood Babylon in a second hand book store. It proved to be an inspired find and led me to the joys of old Hollywood history and scandal. Anger’s version of the past might have been highly disputable but what was beyond debate was the obvious love he had for the bygone stars of the silver screen. It is a love undoubtedly shared by Karina Longworth the writer and presenter of ‘You must Remember this’, an utterly riveting trawl through Tinseltown’s greatest stars and scandals.
The series on ‘Charlie Manson’s Hollywood’ is particularly brilliant and disturbing as it looks at the tragedy from multiple viewpoints whilst placing it firmly in the history of the time. Perhaps the greatest compliment I can pay it was that it was the equal of any TV series I’ve seen this year.
