Southern Californian Raymond Pettibon has been a counter culture artist since his days playing bass, albeit briefly, in his big brother’s punk band ‘Black Flag’.
But it was with a pen rather than a guitar that he found the tool that would unleash his creativity
His comic like drawings in black and white and color are often accompanied by pieces of ironic and disturbing text sometimes relating to political events of the time.
Indeed, he has acknowledged the influence of political cartoonists along with artists like William Blake who used etchings to illustrate his philosophy, and Goya.
Currently he has an extensive exhibition at the New Museum in the Bowery called ‘A Pen of all Work’ which is well worth seeing.
