In 2003 Prefab Sprout frontman Paddy McAloon released an album under his own name. Titled ‘I Trawl the Megahertz’ this beautiful and poignant album was made at a time when McAloon was going through a particularly difficult time. Detached retinas had left him facing blindness and increasingly isolated he spent his nights listening to short wave radio and recordings snippets of found sound and conversation from the shows he came across.
He then set this to lush Debussyesque orchestration to produce one of the most unusual and out there albums of the last twenty years. The themes of memory and passing time feature heavily in the final work and make it possibly the most moving thing McAloon has ever done.
Now re-released under the Prefab Sprout name hopefully there will be a wider audience for this fantastic album.
